What is the best functional beer in the UK?

IMPOSSIBREW Enhanced Lager can on a kitchen worktop: 88% cut down or stopped drinking alcohol

Short answer: IMPOSSIBREW is our pick for a full-size, beer-first functional alcohol alternative. Enhanced Lager contains 1,650mg of Social Blend per 440ml can, compared with 400mg of Unwind Blend in Collider's 330ml can. IMPOSSIBREW combines an award-winning lager with L-theanine, ashwagandha, magnesium citrate and vitamin B1. Collider is the narrower choice for a smaller, lower-calorie can containing Lion's Mane.

This is IMPOSSIBREW's own guide. We compare declared ingredients, serving sizes, nutrition and current one-off pack prices. We have not conducted a head-to-head clinical trial. Blend weights describe different formulations, not a ranking of their effects.

What is functional beer?

Functional beer is beer with added ingredients such as botanicals, amino acids, vitamins or minerals. In alcohol-free beer, the idea is to keep the flavour and social ritual while adding something beyond the removal of alcohol.

The word “functional” does not tell you which ingredients are present, how much of each is included or what the finished drink has been shown to do. Read the label before choosing.

Best for A full-size lager with Social Blend A smaller, lower-calorie beer with Lion's Mane

The serving-size detail matters. IMPOSSIBREW's label states 375mg of Social Blend per 100ml, not per can. A 440ml can contains 1,650mg: 375 x 4.4. Collider states its full Unwind Blend is 400mg per can.

Social Blend's total includes soluble plant fibre and citrus extract. It is not 1,650mg of ashwagandha, L-theanine or adaptogens. These totals do not reveal either brand's dose of each ingredient, and a heavier blend does not prove a stronger effect.

What do IMPOSSIBREW customers report?

In IMPOSSIBREW's 2024 customer survey, 88% of 775 respondents reported cutting down or stopping alcohol consumption.

Why choose IMPOSSIBREW?

Taste, a full-size can and Social Blend make IMPOSSIBREW our overall choice for this job. Enhanced Lager is rated the UK's Best Tasting Alcohol-Free Lager by the World Beer Awards. Its product page currently shows 4.6/5 from 1,449 reviews, checked on 3 November 2026. That is the product-page rating, not a Trustpilot score.

Social Blend was developed with Dr Paul Chazot, Chair of Pharmacology at Durham University. Our Social Blend page brings together 52 peer-reviewed randomised controlled trials on its ingredients. Those are ingredient studies, not 52 clinical trials of the finished beer.

Enhanced Lager is vegan and gluten-free below 20ppm. It still contains barley and wheat, so gluten-free does not mean wheat-free. Its sugar content is 0.7g per 100ml.

The trade-offs are clear: IMPOSSIBREW costs more per can and contains more calories than Collider's smaller serving. It does not contain Lion's Mane. At the £30 packs compared above, however, it costs less per 100ml.

When is Collider the better fit?

Choose Collider if Lion's Mane is part of what you want, or if you prefer a 330ml can with 36 calories. Its £30 pack also gives you twelve cans rather than ten.

The smaller serving contains less beer, and its Unwind Blend is a different recipe. Neither its ingredient list nor ours establishes that one finished beer will work better for you.

Are functional, nootropic and adaptogen beers the same?

They overlap. “Functional” is the broad category. “Nootropic” is a term used for ingredients associated with mental function. “Adaptogen” usually refers to certain plants or fungi, including ashwagandha. L-theanine is an amino acid, not an adaptogen; magnesium and vitamin B1 are nutrients.

For the label-reading checklist, see which adaptogen beers you can buy in the UK. For the formula and ingredient research, read Social Blend.

Who should avoid these beers?

IMPOSSIBREW is for adults aged 18 and over and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you take medication or have a medical condition, check suitability with a doctor or pharmacist. Ashwagandha can interact with medicines and is not suitable for everyone. NCCIH explains the relevant cautions.

Functional beer is not a treatment for anxiety, stress or sleep problems. A 0.5% beer is also not a 0.0% beer. If you need to avoid alcohol completely, choose a drink that meets that requirement.

Which should you buy?

For a full-size, award-winning lager with Social Blend, choose IMPOSSIBREW Enhanced Lager. For a smaller, lower-calorie functional beer containing Lion's Mane, consider Collider. Compare the recipe and serving you want, rather than treating milligrams as a promise of results.
